plants and fresh cut flower bouquets
Owner: Nancy Barton
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Meet the Grower: Nancy Barton
Nancy Barton started The Daily Blossom in 1986 with her friend Anna Chase (now with Artesian Farm). “We started as flower vendors in downtown Indianapolis, dressed in vintage clothing, and sold cut flowers from a stand on the corner of Delaware and Market.” They also sold table bouquets and herbs to restaurants in Broad Ripple long before the current farm-to-table movement began.
In addition to her regular job as a lecturer at IUPUI, teaching wellness, stress management and alternative approaches to health; Nancy calls this her “summer job.” With the help of Mother Nature, she grows herbs, perennials, native plants and vegetables at her home in Rocky Ripple in the cold house and garden. She and husband Bob (Sander) produce much of the food for their own table, preserving everything they can and planting flowers among the vegetables.
All of the plants are chemical-free, cultivated just 3 miles from the Market from seed, not from a nursery. The native plants thrive in this local environment so you can be sure they will be happy in your local environment as well. Bouquets change weekly depending on what is blooming. Nancy uses herbs (mint, basil, fennel, oregano, and others) in all of her bouquets adding a nice scent.
“I love the beauty of flowers…being outdoors in the garden and in touch with the rhythm of the seasons,” says Nancy. She must truly enjoy what she does, as she has been with the BRFM every year since it started in 1996 and started the Rocky Ripple Farmers Market in 1995. She also coordinated the Rocky Ripple Burkhart Community Garden in 2000 which now has over 40 gardeners, a cold house, berry bushes, and fruit trees. I guess you could call it a genuine labor of love.
